I’m trying something a little different to see how it goes. After all the hassle of trying to move everything to WordPress.com vs. my self-hosted thing on Dreamhost, I’m back on Dreamhost. I’ve been on Dreamhost for well over a decade. I was thinking about shutting my Dreamhost account down to save money, hassle and time. One of the things that bugged me about my shared server account was my site would be dreadfully slow sometimes. While annoying, it wasn’t the end of the world and there was a pretty simple way to make it faster – Dreamhost VPS. So now I’m paying a little more money, but my site is faster and there are some other geeky advantages that I won’t go into.
The other thing is that since I started participating in the awesome micro.blog community, it kind of clutters everything up with these microblog posts, some of which are out of context. So I moved all that to a micro.blog hosted microblog, which redirects to micro.whatevernevermind.com. If you’re using an RSS reader, which you should, you can add that to your feed reader as well. It’s much more frequent posts (multiple times/day) with lots of links and stuff. This space will be used for more longer form posts, which I plan to also do more often. Gonna see how this works. I’ll keep comments open for a bit in case anyone has questions or feedback.
I can’t even make it through these testimonials of the cruelty of Trump’s deportation.
Angelica Rebeca Gonzalez-Garcia (Guatemala)
Backstory: The 31-year-old mother fled domestic abuse with her then seven-year-old daughter.
Testimony: “On May 10, 2018, the day after our arrest, Officers came into the room and told me that they intended to take my daughter away from me… Most devastating of all, the Officers said I would never see my daughter again. When the Officers told me this, I felt like collapsing and dying. I cannot express the pain and fear I felt at that point. My daughter was only seven years old and she was much too young to be taken from me.
“When I asked why, the Officers said that I had ‘endangered’ her by bringing her here… During this same conversation one of the officers asked me ‘In Guatemala do they celebrate mother’s day?’ When I answered yes he said, ‘Then Happy Mother’s Day,’ because the next Sunday was Mother’s day. I lowered my head so that my daughter would not see the tears forming in my eyes. That particular act of cruelty astonished me then as it does now. I could not understand why they hated me so much, or wanted to hurt me so much.”
Again, as a parent… as a HUMAN, I am grief-stricken. How can we be treating people with this level of cruelty?! I feel so helpless. I feel sick.
The obligatory approach into LA.
We made it to Denver with about 5 minutes to spare before bairding started. Not how I like to role, but we made it. Now at home in LA. Quite a journey. We took two cars, a bus, a tram, a plane and one more car. Record heat in LA. 🔥 😴
Not really surprised that people gave access to apps that allow Gmail messages to be ‘read by human third parties’. It’s rather misleading to blame Google and I’m far from a Google apologist. Audit the apps that have access to your Gmail and consider using ProtonMail.
Not sure we’re gonna get out of Colorado tomorrow, at least not out of the airport we intended. The Lake Christine Fire has Aspen Airport closed down, at least through tonight. Not scheduled to leave until tomorrow evening, but it’s not looking good.
We might not make it out of Colorado due to the Lake Christine Fire. We’re not due to leave until tomorrow night, but no planes are getting in or out of Aspen today.
Welp, I’m back on Dreamhost. I’ve spent weeks trying to get this site set up on WordPress.com and it has been the biggest pain in the ass. If everything is set up correctly, this should also post to Micro.blog.
