The Missing Loop in Health Hacking
My friend @tdavidson did a nice write-up on all of the various technologies he’s using to keep track of his health. One of the inspirations for this blog was that I was starting to see a lot of companies and devices coming to market that tracked people’s health in various ways. As a data nerd, I love it, especially when it comes to exercise. Being healthy just isn’t motivation enough for me, but sprinkle some data and gameplay mechanics in and all of the sudden I have motivation. I want to beat my last score. I want to be faster. I want to keep my heart rate up for longer. You get the idea.
It’s early days with this stuff and I completely agree with Taylor that until there’s some consolidation, or at the very least APIs and software that aggregates data from each device and app, it’s not going to be widely adopted. For example, I have no way of combining the data that my Suunto t4d records about my heart rate and pace and what the Nike+ GPS app on my iPhone captures. As of now it’s a manual process, which kinda sucks. Perhaps Taylor and I should combine efforts on this.
