Magnetic Fields were the second show I saw with Laura. I’d call it a date, but I was taking the place of a friend who flaked. We’ll be seeing them again soon, almost two years to the day and I’m pretty excited about it.

Magnetic Fields mastermind, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea composer, and Strange Powers star Stephin Merritt sat down for a relatively rare, videotaped interview with The New Gay last week (via The Music Slut), and the result is quite funny, entertaining, and, of course, fascinating. Merritt has a reputation for giving cantankerous interviews (as Neil Gaiman says, “He made Lou Reed look like Little Orphan Annie”), but interviewer Zack Rosen does an honorable job at getting him to open up as the 25-minute talk progresses.
